Spring is right around the corner!
Flowers are beginning to bloom and trips to the nursery to purchase beautiful plants to adore our yards and patio planters. There are hundreds of gorgeous plants and trees to choose from, but there are just as many that are toxic to our pets if they ingest or come into contact with skin.
Some Common Poisonous Plants:
- Autumn Crocus
- Azalea
- Calla Lily
- Daffodil
- Elephant Ears
- Eucalyptus
- Geranium
- Gladiolas
- Hibiscus
- Hyacinths
- Lily of the Valley
- Morning Glory
- Periwinkle
The list is quite extensive, and it is always best to check with your vet if you have questions. A web search will reveal many many more plants and trees.
Some plants can cause skin issues while others can cause gastrointestinal, central nervous system issues, organ damage, and even death. Do not assume a particular plant is safe for your pet. Always use caution and prevent them from chewing on unknown flowers or other vegetation.
There are also non-toxic plants to keep your pets safe and your mind at ease. Make sure you do your research before heading to nursery.
When in doubt, call your veterinarian and keep a poison control hotline number handy.
